News and Updates

It's difficult to have much respect for any organization that would move an event or hold an event the weekend of or same day as the Ohio Cross Country Middle School State Championships simply to try and stop kids from attending. Runners look forward to this event every year, it really is the MOST FUN day of the cross country season. Let the kids have their ONE and ONLY day in Groveport guys, what you are doing is hurting not helping Ohio Cross Country. I hope our runners and coaches continue to have the courage to come and compete even in the face of these obstacles. Don't allow others to force you to choose their path, You already know the right Course to run!

Not sure if the OHSAA will be running their fundraising event on October 18th this year or if it will even happen but you can count on the Ohio Middle School State Championships being held in Groveport October 19th 2014! If you enter as part of your school season you are covered by your school insurance if you come as a club team you are covered by our insurance. Either way your School district will assume no more risk then any other meet your team competes in this year.

We are happy to announce that professional distance runner Craig Leon will be joining us at this year's 2013 Ohio Middle School State Cross Country Championships. Leon will be on hand to pass out awards and all runners, parents, and spectators will have a chance to meet, and talk with, Craig during the day.

Craig is a native Ohioan who has spent the last several years steadily climbing the marathon ranks. Leon has turned out several impressive performances since making his marathon debut in 2010, including a 10th place finish at the 2013 Boston Marathon, a 12th place in the 2014 Boston Marathon, a 1st place finish at the 2013 Mississippi Blues Marathon, a 20th place finish at the 2012 Chicago Marathon, and a 26th place finish at the 2012 US Olympic Marathon Trials. Craig has shown incredible consistency since moving up to the marathon, especially considering where he started.

Leon grew up in Van Wert, Ohio, where he ran high school track and cross country at Van Wert High School. It wasn't until his senior season that Craig began to show an aptitude for distance running, when he placed 11th in the Division 2 state cross country championships, and 11th in the 3200m at Division 2 state track and field championships. He then attended college at Ohio University, where he joined the Bobcat cross country and track and field teams as a walk-on athlete. Leon's college career mirrored his high school career, as he saw his greatest improvements during his junior and senior years. He ended his collegiate career by qualifying for the NCAA Cross Country Championships, a feat that very few walk-on runners are able to achieve.

Since college, Leon has turned his attention to road racing, competing in races ranging from the 5k to the marathon. In 2011 he moved from Athens, Ohio to Oregon to join Team Run Eugene, an elite training group based in Eugene. His choice to move to the running capital of the US has paid dividends, as he currently has the 5th fastest marathon time by an American in 2013. Craig is currently coached by 2008 Olympian Ian Dobson and is sponsored by Mizuno.

Coaches NOW is the time to add the Ohio Middle School State Championship meet to your regular season schedules for 2014! If you already have your limit of 12 meets scheduled consider replacing one of your smaller non competitive events with the state meet and bring your entire team to Groveport and spend a fun filled weekend with your kids.

Parents and Coaches,

One of the goals of the Middle School Athletic Association is to help Track and Cross Country Athletes get the same recognition as the other sports get. You can help us accomplish that! Once your team or athlete has entered the State Meet please take some time to send a picture and short write up to your local Newspaper to announce that they will be participating in this years event. If they do well at the meet snap a photo and send to your paper as well.

Please read:

Coaches, Athletes and Parents This is a post season event. This Cross Country event nor the Middle School Athletic Association is affiliated with, sponsored by or sanctioned by the OHSAA in any way.
